Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breast tissue in boys or men swells and is not something that can go away with diet or exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, 25% of men between the ages of 50 and 80 have gynecomastia. It is also very common for newborn boys to be born with breast tissue that will go away as they age or boys going through puberty to develop breast tissue that will also dissipate. However, if gynecomastia occurs in adulthood, it is often due to an imbalance in a man's hormones and the condition will not go away without surgery.
The breast tissue develops because of an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. If a man has an enlarged breast it is because there is an abundance of fat, breast tissue, or both. If the condition is primarily breast tissue, our New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Lefkovits, can remove this tissue by performing a subcutaneous mastectomy. This procedure involves an incision made in the lower portion of the areola and then the breast tissue is cut out.
However, if the tissue is either all fat or a combination of fat and breast tissue, then Dr. Lefkovits can perform gynecomastia surgery via liposuction to remove it. Liposuction can also be done in combination with the removal of fat from the stomach and love handles if desired.
Following the procedure, you will find yourself empowered by the fact that you can take your shirt off or wear a tight shirt without the embarrassment of looking as though you have breasts. Also, you will be able to develop pectoral muscles that won't be covered by a layer of fat and breast tissue.
Gynecomastia correction is one of the most commonly requested procedures by men and Dr. Lefkovits has been performing the procedure for decades. He has the experience and the artistic eye that you're looking for to provide your New York male breast reduction.
