The announcement that breast augmentation with fat transplantation would be offered next year in Britain has caused a significant stir. The procedure has received tentative approval from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and is being offered by some surgeons in the United States, will be offered commercially by many plastic surgeons in Britain in 2010. Proponents believe that within ten years this procedure "will dominate the breast enlargement market."
There is concern, however, that hype for the procedure may be outpacing its performance. British surgeons offer more exaggerated claims than their American counterparts, saying that breasts can be increased by up to three cup sizes, whereas most American doctors claim a more modest improvement of about one cup size. In addition, little information has been offered about the possibility of dieback among transplanted fat, which can lead to a correctable uneven appearance in the breasts that requires a second or third procedure to achieve permanent results. In addition, concerns about how fat transplantation can appear in mammograms are not being mentioned.
However, this is an exciting technique, representing a huge advance and potential benefits for millions of women in the UK and in the US. New York plastic surgeon Dr. George Lefkovits has extensive experience with fat grafting through the numerous buttock augmentation procedures he has performed, and is considering whether this new variation can help his patients.
