Liposuction might at first seem an ideal tool for breast reduction. Liposuction results in only minimal scarring, unlike traditional breast reduction, which requires significant incisions in the breast and leaves what is commonly described as a "lollipop" scar on the breast. Liposuction is also a much quicker and easier procedure than traditional surgical breast reduction. Liposuction might make the procedure more affordable for some patients. Since liposuction is the standard treatment for male breast (gynecomastia) reduction, it might seem a natural choice for female breast reduction.
However, liposuction is often not appropriate for breast reduction for the same reason that tummy tuck is often preferred over liposuction for contouring the belly. Liposuction can remove fat, but it does not remove excess skin. If liposuction alone were used for breast reduction, most women would be left with empty sagging breasts. Surgical breast reduction, on the other hand, allows New York plastic surgeon Dr. George Lefkovits to reshape the breast, creating an attractive, shapely, youthful-looking breast.
Even women who are less concerned with the appearance of their breasts have good reason to prefer traditional reduction over reduction with liposuction. Some people have expressed concern that the internal scarring left by liposuction may obscure mammography results. However, this concern remains theoretical, as it has never been studied.
Because of these concerns, traditional surgical breast reduction remains the standard of care. Breast reduction is a very successful procedure that can relieve discomfort in your back, neck, and shoulders caused by large breasts.
