NYC breast implant surgeon Dr. George Lefkovits is often asked what are advantages of silicone versus saline breast implants. Read his answer below.
Congratulations on deciding on breast implants! This surgical procedure is one of the most successful ways that women can increase confidence, look younger, and look better than ever. However, making the decision to get breast implants is not the only thing to consider when you are getting the surgery. Many surgeons provide multiple implant options to fit all types of needs and requirements. The most popular implants are silicone and saline. These implants use a different material and have a different surgical procedure.
Silicone implants are pre-filled with a thick gel that mimics human fat. While this implant type was only recently approved again by the FDA, they have been wildly popular with women because of their appearance and texture. Some advantages and disadvantages of silicone implants are as following:
- More natural feel
- Less likely to have rippling
- More difficult to customize size
- Not available to younger women
Saline implants are filled with salt water after insertion. This implant option is preferable for women that may want more freedom for their surgeon to fill their implant to a specific contour. These implants have been in good standing with the FDA for a long time and leaks are easy to detect and not dangerous for the woman, as the salt water absorbs quickly in the bloodstream. However, some women feel as these implants do not appear or feel as natural. The positive aspects of saline implants are:
- More affordable
- Better option for breast asymmetry
- Smaller incision
- Available to younger women
- Not as ideal for women with thinner skin
Both implant types are safe and offer many advantages. Meeting with a breast surgeon is the optimal way to find out which implant type may work best for you. We can go over your aesthetic goals and any risks or concerns that you may have.
