If I have a medical problem, can I still undergo plastic surgery?

Buttock and Breast Augmentation (NYC), Park Plaza Plastic Surgery New York (NY)

New York plastic surgeon George Lefkovits, M.D., is often asked by patients, "If I have a medical problem, can I still undergo plastic surgery?"

Generally, plastic surgeons have health as top criteria for surgery eligibility. It is difficult for those in poor health to recover successfully from a surgery and achieve results that are positive. In addition, plastic surgery requires anesthesia, including general anesthesia, which is similar to a medically induced coma, so that the surgeon can successfully perform the procedure without putting your body through trauma and you through extensive pain.

For healthy people, anesthesia can be very safe with no long term side effects. However, when people are not in optimal health, losing the protection of reflexes and respiration can be very traumatic to the system. As a result of that, some surgeons may refuse to perform your surgery out of concern for your overall health and safety. Some common medical problems that may not necessarily preclude you from having elective plastic surgery are as following:

  • Weight issues (underweight or overweight)
  • Smoking
  • Drug or alcohol problems
  • Heart conditions
  • Poor respiration

It is in your best interest to disclose any of these medical conditions during your initial consultation. Your plastic surgeon may require you to get surgery clearance from your medical doctor. This depends on the type and severity of your medical problem. The only way to know for sure is to meet with us and discuss your condition. If possible, please bring your medical records.

In addition, the facilities in which your surgery take place can determine whether you can get the surgery. Surgeries that are performed in an office are usually for these that are in better health, while surgeries in hospitals may have the resources that are needed if complications arise. If you undergo office surgery, please make sure that the facility is accredited.
