It's not Your Imagination: Women Are Becoming More Attractive

Many women may feel that the competition for looking better than average is becoming tougher.  There are many reasons for this.  Part of it is because as women age, they may have a harder time looking as good as they used to.  Another part of it is that the world is super-saturated with media images that are dominated by attractive-looking women.  But another part of it is that women are becoming more attractive with each passing generation, according to researchers.

According to a study published in July by researchers at the University of Helsinki, women who were rated more attractive by a panel of reviewers were more likely to have more children than less attractive women.  According to the study, women who were rated more attractive had up to 16 percent more children.  They were also 36 percent more likely to have a daughter for their first born child, increasing the likelihood that they will pass on their good looks to future women.

This study follows earlier findings that women with curvaceous hips and larger breasts had about 30 percent higher livels of estradiol, a reproductive hormone that impacts fertility, than women with other body types. According to researchers, this higher hormone level can make them up to 3 times more likely to get pregnant.  In a different study, women with higher estradiol levels were confirmed to be considered more attractive, and were also shown to be more interested in extramarital affairs.

Fortunately for the rest of us, plastic surgery can help even the odds.  Breast augmentation can give larger breasts to women who are not naturally endowed, and liposuction or a tummy tuck can help women achieve the coveted 0.7 to 0.8 waist-to-hip ratio.

In addition, the University of Helsinki study showed that men have no correlation between attractiveness and reproductive success, which makes it likely that men will not grow more attractive.
