One of the most common treatments we offer for men is hair restoration. With more than 35 million men in the United States facing male pattern baldness, hair restoration treatments are more common than ever. There are many options available to balding individuals, including surgical treatments like scalp reduction, scalp lifting and flap surgery. There are also non-surgical options like hair pieces and hair weaving. At Park Plaza Plastic Surgery, we rely on micro and mini grafts to restore hair, as they are the safest and most applicable options.
Before your procedure, Dr. George Lefkovits will need to get a detailed medical history from you, especially in regard to baldness in your family, as well as the current progression you have seen in your own hair loss. Most important, perhaps, is understanding the your expectations and appreciating which bald areas are most bothersome. If you have sought other hair restoration treatments, it is important that you share those with our plastic surgeon, even if those treatments were unsuccessful.
A careful evaluation is made of the donor site in the back of the scalp to ascertain both the quality of the hair and its extent as a donor site. Hair restoration is usually done in three or occasionally four stages with each stage four months apart. The operation is performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation. Strips of hair are removed from the back of the scalp. These are then cut into tiny one- and three-hair grafts that are then inserted into the bald areas via slits in the scalp.
When dealing with hair grafts, it is important to understand the differences involved. A standard graft consists of skin strips of around 40 hairs whereas a mini graft has 5 to 12 hairs on a strip. A micro graft has even less hair on the skin strip, using one to four hairs. Typically, a mini graft is used for larger balding areas while a micro graft is used commonly at the hairline.
After the procedure, you will wear a bandage for one day, after which it is removed and the hair is shampooed. Henceforth, you can shower and gently shampoo and comb the hair. Patients can usually return to work after one day. The stitches from the back of the scalp are removed in 10 to 14 days. The next stage can usually be performed after four months.
As with any procedure, there are risks associated with hair transplantation, but those risks are minimized by seeking treatment with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
