As we age, our face typically begins to sag, which can result in wrinkles, folds, jowls and loose skin that obscures our profile. If you have begun to see some of these signs of facial aging, you may benefit from a facelift, which can tighten the skin of the face, remove excess skin and fat, and restore a more youthful appearance to your face. Although there are many non-surgical options, nothing currently addresses the same issues as the facelift or gives such global, long-lasting results.

The Effects of Age on the Face
There are three main causes of facial aging. First, over time, the skin loses its elasticity and becomes stretched. Second, your face will lose some volume, creating a more gaunt appearance. Third, gravity pulls down on the face, stretching the skin and displacing fat pads and other tissues. Together, these three factors create deeply folded skin, hollows under the eyes or in the cheeks, and hanging jowls and skin in the neck.
Although a man’s face can take some aging while remaining attractive or dignified, certain changes, like jowling or drooping skin that obscures the profile, can be very damaging to your self-image, and these respond well to the facelift procedure.
There are three main areas of the face that can be addressed with facelifts: the brows, the midface and the lower face and neck area. The midface and lower face are often addressed in a single procedure while a browlift is performed separately, often in combination with a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
Incisions for facelifts are typically placed in the hair and around the ear. For browlifts, the incisions encircle the forehead and may be placed far back to remain concealed despite hair loss. Sometimes, a small incision is also required. Overall, the scars typically heal well and remain concealed in the crease around the ear or in the hair.
The modern facelift works simultaneously on the muscles, fat and skin to create long-lasting and natural-looking results. A facelift preserves your appearance so that you still look like you, only younger. The muscles and skin are moved up and replaced in their more youthful positions. Excess skin may be removed. Fat can be repositioned both by replacing fat pads in their youthful position and by using fat grafting to fill voids and facial creases caused by loss of facial volume.
Facelift Recovery and Results
Typically, you will wear a bandage for about two days following your facelift procedure. Stitches will be removed starting at 4 days and should be completely removed at about 10 days. There will be some bruising in the face area, but it can be concealed with makeup. There may be tightness in the neck area that can persist for several weeks. You may also experience numbness in the face and moderate discomfort that may persist for some time.
Facelift results can dramatically impact the entire appearance of your face, giving you a more youthful look over the entire treated region, although you may want to address fine wrinkling with laser resurfacing. Results are long-lasting, sometimes up to ten years or more, although aging will continue to affect your face. The quality of your results may be affected by your skin quality and bone structure.
