Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Conveniently located to serve the areas of New York, NY

Ethnic rhinoplasty near me performed on different ethnicities

Do you want to undergo a rhinoplasty, but you are not certain if it is going to keep your ethnic identity or change your cultural inherited appearance?

Facial features may vary from patient to patient, resulting in different nose sizes or shapes, and overall facial appearance when it comes to a specific ethnicity.

Before and After Photos

Since every ethnic group has its unique characteristics, here at Park Plaza Plastic Surgery center we appreciate ethnic differences and aim to create a natural-looking nose and improve your overall appearance and/or nasal function, while respecting ethnic variations.

For example, as an African American, you may be having a slightly wider nasal tip, or maybe flared nostrils. On the other side, patients of Hispanic or Latino heritage may be reaching out for ethnic rhinoplasty because of thicker nasal skin or wide, flat nostrils.

Traditional vs Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgeon

If you are considering rhinoplasty in New York City, and as a patient whose ethnicity is non-Caucasian, you should search for a board-certified ethnic rhinoplasty surgeon who specializes in ethnic rhinoplasty. An ethnic rhinoplasty surgeon is skilled to recognise specific nose features in each ethnicity.

Considerations

Common reasons why our ethnic rhinoplasty patients seek an ethnic rhinoplasty procedure:

  • Because of an asymmetry (improving facial symmetry)
  • To reshape the nose or the tip of the nose (for example – bulbous, pinched, or droopy nasal tip)
  • To adjust the size or shape of the nose
  • To correct deformities after injury;
  • To correct a crooked nose
  • In order to open their nasal airways and improve breathing function
  • For the better overall appearance of the nose and therefore increased confidence in our patients

Ideal Candidate

In our NYC office, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. George Lefkovits and find out if you are a candidate for this procedure.

If you are thinking about ethnic rhinoplasty, you should:

  • be in good overall physical health, (as you will have to take a physical exam and special blood testing)
  • let us know about the medical condition(s) you have
  • have realistic expectations of the outcome of the ethnic rhinoplasty
  • have an open mind and completely present desired look of the nose to our plastic surgeon

Who might be interested

You should be aware that people of every age, race, ethnicity, or cultural background seek to make certain corrections. Many African American, Latino and Asian patients are coming to our clinic to reshape their noses, adjust their size, improve facial symmetry, and more.

When we discuss ethnic rhinoplasty, we generally refer to 4 different ethnic groups:

  • African American
  • Asian
  • Middle Eastern
  • Latino

They each have different inherent differences and, therefore, require different forms of surgical correction.

What Defines an African American Nose?

African American thinking about African American rhinoplasty

Patients of African American origin often come to our office in New York with a desire for an ethnic rhinoplasty.

The African American nose typically has the following features:

  •    Low nasal bridge
  •    Wide nasal tip
  •    Flat Tip
  •    Flared nostrils
  •    Poor Tip support
  •    The wide horizontal dimension of the nostrils

How To Correct the African American Nose?

African American rhinoplasty is performed by doing the surgical correction elevating the nasal bridge. This can be done with cartilage or bone. When the bridge is not too low, septal cartilage is generally used, sometimes in layers. Additionally, when more height is needed, then Rib Cartilage or Bone may be used.

Rib Cartilage can be taken from the patient but would lead to a chest scar and other possible complications. Here at Park Plaza Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lefkovits uses an Irradiated Rib Cartilage graft which he obtains from a tissue bank and then carves it appropriately. This leaves no surgical scar and avoids possible complications associated with taking one’s own Rib.

Other materials that can be used while performing African American rhinoplasty, but are less preferable, include:

  • Bone from hips, skull, or extremities;
  • Silastic synthetic material.

To correct the base of the nose, septal cartilage is generally used. It will provide tip projection, and change the horizontal dimension of the base of the nose to a more vertical dimension. This also may improve nasal breathing because of the support provided.

The tip cartilages are usually improved by sophisticated suturing.

The flaring of the nostrils is reduced using an incision around the nostril groove which almost always leaves an inconspicuous scar.

What Defines an Asian Nose?

Asian noses have similar features to African American noses but they are less extreme:

  • Low nasal bridge
  • Wide and flat nasal tip
  • Poor tip projection
  • Nostril flaring

How Is an Asian Rhinoplasty Performed?

The Asian ethnic nose job surgery requires similar steps as the African American procedure.

Septal cartilage is usually used to increase the height of the bridge of the nose. Because the nose bridge is not as low as that of African Americans, rib cartilage and bone are not often used. Synthetic material is also regularly used, especially in Asia.

To improve the tip of the nose, specialized suturing along with a cartilage tip graft is used.

When it comes to the correction of the nostril flaring, it is reduced by making an incision around the nostrils leaving, essentially, an inconspicuous scar.

If you are searching for an Asian rhinoplasty specialist, Dr. G. Lefkovits will provide you with answers to all of your questions and he will make sure your desired cosmetic surgery goal is achieved.

Middle Eastern Nose Plastic Surgery

Middle Eastern ethnic rhinoplasty consultation with ethnic plastic surgeon near me

The Middle Eastern nose (Italian, Greek, Arabic) is usually associated with:

  • strong nasal bridge (bridge of the nose)
  • drooping tip

The other features are similar to those in Caucasian patients.

What Is The Usual Aesthetic Goal of the Middle Eastern Patient?

Middle Eastern patients want to soften their nasal profile but maintain their Middle Eastern character. They do not want a nasal slope. Sometimes they even want to maintain a residual mild nasal hump to accentuate a natural look.

It is very important for the plastic surgeon to respect the ethnicity of each patient and carefully review the plan for the surgery. From our experience, these patients are extremely grateful when the surgery achieves their anticipated goal.

What Constitutes a Latino (Hispanic) Nose?

Like every other patient’s ethnic heritage, nose characteristics in Latino patients (Spanish, Caribbean, or Central/South American heritage) can vary. Their nose may have Caucasian features, African American features, or a blend of both. It depends upon the purity of ethnic origin.

The common nose features seen in our patients with Latino heritage:

  • thicker nasal skin and a bulbous tip
  • high bridge of the nose with a hump
  • wide nostrils

If the appearance is essentially Caucasian-like, then the rhinoplasty would be like that of a Caucasian nose.

If the nose resembles that of an African American regardless of the degree of severity, the rhinoplasty will follow that of an African American.

FAQ

What Type of Anesthesia Is Used For Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

We usually use general anesthesia. It means that you will not be awake during the procedure.

In some cases, we only use sedation. This is thoroughly reviewed with the patient before the surgery.

What are Possible Discomforts and Complications?

Just like every other procedure, ethnic rhinoplasty includes certain risks, similar to the ones regarding regular rhinoplasty.

Common risks include allergic reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, scarring (internal or external), changes in skin sensation, infection, poor wound healing, and difficulty breathing.

Of course, there is always a possibility you may need additional surgery. At our clinic, this risk varies from 5-10%. You may need to wait at least half a year for another procedure.

What Can I Expect From Recovery After Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

The recovery process regarding ethnic rhinoplasty looks similar to regular rhinoplasty recovery. Detailed information will be given to each of our patients before the beginning of the ethnic rhinoplasty procedure.

When Can I Return To Daily Activities?

The recovery period for rhinoplasty procedures often takes up to two weeks, but most patients are able to return to daily activities or non-strenuous work after 7- 10 days.

Your recovery will continue to be monitored periodically throughout the year.

How Will My Nose Look Like After an Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

It is completely normal to feel worried and uncertain about the outcome of the ethnic rhinoplasty. As an experienced doctor who has worked with many patients, Dr. Lefkovits will review with you the plan and the goals of surgery and will substantiate with before and after photos.

What will the free consultation consist of in New York?

A consultation is an in-office meeting between the doctor and the patient. Our doctor, Dr. Lefkovits is going to:

* ask you to look into a mirror and point out the areas of concern regarding your nose;
* discuss the plan for surgery and review with you the different options;

By the time you leave, you will have a very comprehensive understanding of the plan for surgery.
