About Eyebrow Hair Transplants

Healthy, full eyebrows can enhance a person’s overall facial symmetry and beauty.

(2) While past cosmetic trends favored excessive plucking, many people today prefer a more natural look. Unfortunately, repeated overplucking can lead to a permanent reduction in eyebrow hair. Hormonal changes, genetics, medical conditions, or even stress can also contribute to hair loss in this area. While techniques like microblading can offer temporary results, an eyebrow hair transplant is often the most effective option for patients looking for a more permanent approach to eyebrow rejuvenation. Different kinds of eyebrow hair transplants exist to address different concerns:

  • Full Eyebrow Restoration: Patients who have completely lost all of their eyebrow hairs from some type of trauma (disease, alopecia areata, burns, tattoos, infections, repeated plucking, or congenital inability) can receive a full eyebrow restoration.
  • Partial Eyebrow Restoration: Partial eyebrow treatments are generally cosmetic, helping to create thicker or enhanced brows, cover a scar in the brow, or correct asymmetry. (3)

In many ways, eyebrow restoration is similar to other hair transplant procedures performed on the scalp. Once harvested and placed into the new location, the transplanted hair is essentially permanent.

Candidates

Both men and women with sparse or nonexistent brows may be eligible for an eyebrow hair transplant procedure. Candidates who consider an eyebrow hair transplant have often experienced:

  • Eyebrow loss or thinning due to plucking
  • Hair loss from trauma or burns
  • Hair thinning from underlying medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases ( Lupus, Alopecia Areata), Thyroid disease (under- or overactive), Cancer such as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and Polycystic ovarian syndrome

Patients should:

  • Be in good overall health and have realistic expectations.
  • Have sufficient hair growth in the back of the scalp to harvest from

Preparation

Once you decide to proceed with your eyebrow hair transplant, we will provide you with specific preparatory steps to ensure the best possible outcome. You may be advised to adjust your medication intake, especially if you regularly take anything that can thin the blood (including supplements). Nicotine use and alcohol consumption should also be avoided before and after your procedure to ensure an optimal healing process.

Procedure

A local anesthetic is used during the eyebrow transplant procedure so that the patient remains awake and alert, yet unable to experience any discomfort.

The basis for eyebrow transplantation is the same as that for the scalp. It involves removing hair follicles from the back of the scalp and transplanting them to the brows. Unlike scalp hair transplants, which use grafts containing multiple follicles, eyebrow hair transplants rely exclusively on the meticulous placement of individual hairs. (3)

The number of one-hair grafts needed depends on the extent of the patient’s hair loss. The restoration may involve 50-600 hairs per eyebrow, but the average number of grafts is 350-500 per eyebrow. Partial eyebrow implants will usually require less.

The procedure usually takes 3-4 hours to complete, but this may vary depending on individual circumstances.

Recovery

Our team will provide guidelines for post-operative care to promote optimal healing. Most patients experience minor swelling and redness in the transplant and donor areas after surgery.

It is advised not to touch your eyebrows in the first 10-14 days to avoid the risks of infection. You can wash your face after 1-2 days, but you should avoid touching your brows when you do this. You will be directed to take a medicine dose pack (a steroid) for 5 days after your treatment to help minimize postoperative swelling and bruising. We will show you how to spray saline on the grafts to keep them moist throughout your recovery.

Results

It is important to keep in mind that hair growth after a hair transplant procedure is a gradual process. As with hair transplantation to the scalp, the transplanted hairs will start to fall out, or ‘shed’, after about 2-3 weeks. The new transplanted hairs may begin to grow after 3-4 months, and full eyebrow thickness is often achieved by 9-12 months. After the initial shedding phase, eyebrow transplant results are generally considered to be permanent.

A significant part of eyebrow hair transplant aftercare is the frequent need to trim the eyebrow hair. Because this hair is taken from the back of the scalp, it will continue to behave and grow like hair in this region. The frequency of trimming varies, but it may require trimming a few times per month. This is not something that you need to come into our office for; this can be done at home.

Corresponding Procedures

The techniques used in eyebrow hair transplantation can be employed to restore hair growth in other areas where hair is sparse or thinning. The most common hair transplant procedures are those that restore hair growth on the scalp. We also offer beard and mustache restoration treatments for men who are experiencing a loss of facial hair definition. If you are interested in exploring these options, please discuss this during your consultation.
