What Makes a Top Plastic Surgeon in NYC

Being a “top plastic surgeon” is more about being the most well-known name in your area; it’s actively possessing the technical skills and knowledge to perform your patients’ corrections and produce seamless, natural-looking results.

Each individual has their own unique medical history, set of concerns, desired aesthetic, and anatomy. This means there is no one-size-fits-all solution to their aesthetic concerns—every patient requires their own custom-tailored plan. Top plastic surgeons not only need to have the right experience and credentials, but they also must be able to adapt their surgical techniques to each unique case.

Dr. Lefkovits has been known as one of the top plastic surgeons in NYC for several years. He provides individualized attention and expertly tailored procedures, all the while maintaining high safety standards and consistently producing stunning results for each and every patient he sees. His philosophy centers around solely performing procedures he knows are safe and effective, and he only recommends procedures to his patients when they will truly benefit. These guiding principles have led him to become one of the most prolific plastic surgeons in NYC, and have also made his practice a trusted resource for patients interested in undergoing plastic surgery.

What it Means to be a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Lefkovits is a double board-certified plastic surgeon, with certifications from both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. When a plastic surgeon is board-certified, it means they have undergone extra training within their chosen specialty to provide a greater level of care to each patient. Because Dr. Lefkovits possesses two different board certifications, he completed the requirements and examinations for both specialties.

How Does a Plastic Surgeon Become Board-Certified?

In order for plastic surgeons to receive their board certification, they must complete a prerequisite of residency training in general surgery

, or in Otolaryngology or occasionally in other specialties such as Orthopedics. This qualifies them for their respective Board Examination certification exam. From there, plastic surgeons must complete either a minimum of 2 years of plastic surgery training from an independent program or a fellowship, or complete 6 years of an integrated program that combines both general and plastic surgery training. (1)

Once surgeons have completed this training, they must pass an oral and written exam. The written exam includes 300 questions, and candidates take it in one sitting. (2) The oral examination takes 2.5 days to complete and consists of preparing 5 case reports. (3)

Plastic Surgery vs. Cosmetic Surgery

When researching their surgeon, many patients come across both plastic and cosmetic surgeons. While these two specialties sound similar and perform similar procedures, there are distinct differences between the two.

Plastic surgery consists of repairing or reconstructing physical defects or functional concerns, and this field incorporates both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures and techniques. Cosmetic surgery is exclusive to aesthetic procedures. (4) It is important to understand that the American Board of Medical Specialties does not recognize cosmetic surgery as a medical specialty, and certifications in this field do not hold the same distinction or require the same amount of experience and training as those from recognized boards.

Dr. Lefkovits’s Training

Dr. Lefkovits received extensive training from some of the country’s leading schools and medical practices.

Dr. Lefkovits first completed his education at George Washington University School of Medicine, as well as the State University of New York Downstate Medical College. These two programs are highly competitive and offer numerous areas of study, research opportunities, and hands-on experience.

He then completed an internship in general surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, which is one of New York’s best hospitals and ranks nationally across nine different specialties. He then completed a residency in Otolaryngology and Head Neck surgery from which he became Board Certified. A two-year residency in Plastic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital followed this, where he served as the chief resident. Lenox Hill Hospital has consistently been at the forefront of many of the country’s medical milestones and discoveries, and it is also nationally ranked for its clinical excellence and dedication to patient care.

Experience Outside of The Practice

When choosing a surgeon, another important consideration is whether they are involved with medical organizations or practices unaffiliated with their own, such as charities, medical schools, or professional organizations. These efforts demonstrate a desire to truly serve those around them, whether they are members of the public, a medical student, or a peer.

Outside of his formal training, Dr. Lefkovits has served in several teaching and lecturing roles, solidifying his position as an authoritative figure within the field of plastic surgery. He has previously served as an assistant professor of plastic surgery at New York Medical College and performed as a guest plastic surgeon in the United Arab Emirates. Currently, he is part of the plastic surgery teaching program at Lenox Hill Hospital and also serves as a counselor for medical students at Downstate Medical College.

Numerous peer-reviewed journals have published Dr. Lefkovits’s research, such as Annals of Plastic Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has also given presentations at the national and international levels, including the national meeting for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. This is an international organization for plastic surgeons that represents more than 11,000 physician members across several countries, and it is also the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world.

Dr. Lefkovits is proud of the work he has accomplished both inside and outside the operating room. Each of these experiences has allowed him to continue shaping his career and expertise while simultaneously serving his communities faithfully.
