Aesthetic surgery is very popular as most people want to improve some part(s) of their body. This could be correcting a nasal deformity, removing a stomach pouch or hanging skin, enhancing or reducing the breasts or several other face or body features.
If a particular feature really bothers someone, then it is advisable to seek consultation with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. Let the surgeon examine you, discuss options for correction whether it be surgical or non-invasive and answer your questions. You should have a clear understanding of the procedure and the alternative treatments. You should also feel comfortable with your surgeon, and if need be, seek a second opinion. But if you are comfortable with your surgeon, understand the procedure and really are seeking correction, then it is preferable not to procrastinate. Time will pass and you will keep looking at your facial or body disturbance, which may lead to continuous anxiety and low self- esteem.
As an example, I recently had a virtual consult with a patient who has been bothered by a facial feature for over 10 years. My preliminary exam suggested that the patient would be a good candidate for surgery. I suggested a follow-up in patient consultation to which the patient responded positively. But the following day, the patient canceled the appointment saying that this was a very important decision and was not ready to make one. This, mind you, after 10 years of procrastination. That is not wise nor healthy. In all likelihood, the patient will continue to be obsessed by the feature and the years will continue to pass along mental anguish.
This doesn’t mean that everyone should have aesthetic correction. But if there is feature which is bothersome and the patient is physically and psychologically healthy, it probably is a good idea to have it corrected.
