Before and After Photos
Maybe you have noticed the age in your eyes, or maybe a friend has pointed it out. Unfortunately, our eyes, so central to our expressiveness and attractiveness, are one of the first places to show age, making us look tired, angry or old no matter how young and energetic we feel.
The good news is, you don’t have to live with aged, angry or tired-looking eyes. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a relatively quick and highly successful way to reduce signs of age in the eye area. To learn more about how blepharoplasty may be able to rejuvenate your appearance, please call to schedule with our New York, New York, plastic surgeon, Dr. George Lefkovits, for a personal consultation today.
Changes in the Eye Region
When young, a woman’s eyes hold much of her charm, and wide, bright, expressive eyes are an essential component of youth and beauty. But with age, a woman’s eyelids can begin to sag or get puffy, narrowing the eyes and creating a tired or aged appearance. Skin and fat may accumulate in both the upper and lower lids. Loss or displacement of fat in the face may cause dark circles under the eye to become deeper and more permanent.
These effects of the eyelid may be worsened by sagging or contracted brows that can create an appearance of anger. Crow’s feet and other wrinkles may deepen around the eyes, making a woman look old beyond her years.
Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery can correct the changes in the eyelids that contribute to a tired, angry and aged appearance. Our New York, New York, plastic surgeon, Dr. George Lefkovits, performs eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) in our state-of-the-art, fully equipped surgicenter. It is normally performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. During surgery, Dr. Lefkovits removes excess skin and fat from both the upper and lower lids. All four lids can be corrected during the same procedure. If desired and applicable, fat from the lower eyelids or elsewhere can be relocated to address hollowness under the eyes.
Blepharoplasty incisions are typically very well hidden: the upper lid incision in the upper eyelid crease, the lower lid incision just below the lashes or on the inside of the eyelid (called the transconjunctival approach).
Recovery
After surgery, you should count on taking several days off from work, perhaps until the stitches are removed at four to five days. At first, your eyes may be sensitive to light. They may also tear up or alternatively be dry. There will be some swelling and discoloration of the eyelids, but after the stitches are removed, you can use makeup to cover the discoloration. Sun exposure to the bruised areas can lead to permanent discoloration, so be sure to shield your eyes when you go out. The incisions generally heal well, becoming almost unnoticeable.
Complementary Procedures
Aging in the eye area is the result of many factors, and Dr. Lefkovits may recommend complementary procedures to get the optimal results from your surgery. BOTOX® cosmetic injections can be used to reduce furrowing in the brows and crow’s feet. A forehead lift can elevate the brows to further improve a tired or angry appearance. Laser resurfacing will address fine wrinkles around the eyes or on the eyelids.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that works to improve the look of your eyes and enhance your overall appearance. Upper and lower eyelid surgery are used to treat:
- Drooping skin that creates folds, obstructs vision or changes the shape of your eyes
- Puffiness caused by fatty deposits
- Bags beneath the eyes
- Lower eyelids that droop and expose the whites of your eyes below the iris
- Wrinkles and lines around the eyes
When you visit our office, our plastic surgeon will examine the areas around your eyes and discuss your cosmetic goals with you. Depending on your condition and your aesthetic goals, we may recommend upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery or both.
Upper eyelid surgery involves lifting the upper eyelid to remove excess skin, thus preventing drooping skin and impaired vision. Lower eyelid surgery works to remove a combination of fatty deposits and excess skin. Both procedures work to give your eyes a smoother and more youthful appearance. You may also find that the shape of your eyes has been improved and sharpened by your procedure.
