Park Plaza Plastic Surgery – NYC Plastic Surgeon

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

After your rhinoplasty (nose surgery) procedure, don’t expect to see your final results right away. Swelling will mask the new shape and overall appearance of your nose for a while. Usually, the worst of the swelling will subside within about two weeks, and continue going down for the remainder of the month. You may be fitted with a splint to protect your nose and keep it stable for anywhere from 5 to 8 days.

Dr. Lefkovits will provide you with medication to manage any discomfort you might experience in the first few days after surgery. Nasal congestion is a common problem after rhinoplasty, but with the right decongestants, this can be controlled until it is safe to blow your nose again. Bruising may also occur beneath your eyes, but this, too, will fade in the coming days and weeks. Cold compresses can help alleviate both bruising and swelling.

If you usually wear glasses that rest on your nose, you should switch to contact lenses until Dr. Lefkovits advises otherwise. When washing your face, be as gentle as possible, and sleep on your back to avoid putting any pressure on your nose while it heals. Most patients are able to return to work within 7 to 10 days after surgery, as long as it does not require any strenuous physical labor.
