What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat from your upper and/or lower eyelids. This procedure can visibly improve sagging of the upper eyelids and the bulging bags under the lower eyelids.
What is the procedure like?
Incisions will be made in the natural lines of your eyelids, which minimizes scarring. Using these incisions, your plastic surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying tissue and remove excess fat and sagging skin. The incision will be closed with tiny sutures, which will be removed within four to five days following surgery.
Am I a candidate for eyelid surgery?
Blepharoplasties can be performed on both men and women. The best candidates are those in good overall health and with realistic expectations. Eyelid surgery can enhance your appearance and increase your self-esteem, but it will not significantly alter your appearance or correct deep wrinkles and lines. What are the risks of eyelid surgery?
Every surgical procedure carries risk. Although complications associated with blepharoplasty are rare, risks include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Pulling down of the lower eyelids
- Asymmetry of eyelids
- Difficulty closing your eyes
- Scarring
- Swelling at the eyelid corners
- Temporary blurred or double vision

What is recovery from blepharoplasty like?
You will likely experience some swelling and light bruising for one to two weeks following eyelid surgery. Some patients also experience minor dryness, itching or a burning sensation in and around the eyes. Your stitches will be removed four or five days after the surgery, and you will need to take at least that many days off work to ensure you heal properly.
