Breast Augmentation

Conveniently located to serve the areas of New York, NY

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty and breast implants surgery, is a plastic surgery aimed to improve the size of a woman’s breasts. But women seek out breast augmentation surgery for many different reasons. This procedure is very popular with our patients and other women across America.

Before and After Photos

Breast Implants Surgery Candidate

Apart from general dissatisfaction with their breast size and shape, some women have asymmetrical breasts that they want to bring into balance, while others have lost volume and firmness in their breasts after pregnancy, age, or major weight loss. In rare cases, for some women breast augmentation is the cause of achieving symmetry between nipples and areolas.

Generally speaking, ideal breast augmentation candidate should meet the following basic qualifications:

  • In good overall health with no major medical problems
  • 18+ years old (for saline breast implants); 22+ years old (for silicone breast implants)
  • Informed about the procedure, including risks and benefits
  • Has realistic expectations and clear cosmetic goals

Ideal Age

The best age for breast augmentation surgery varies depending upon the individual. But patients should be over 18 years of age so that full development of the breast has occurred, in addition to being psychologically ready for a breast augmentation procedure.

A good age for many patients to get breast implants is the early 20s when most have not yet undergone childbirth with its attendant changes to the breasts. Your 20s can be a particularly difficult time for maintaining self-esteem and having larger breasts can restore the confidence needed to maximize one’s sense of sexuality and sexual attractiveness.

Some patients are ready for breast augmentation only after childbirth when their breasts have lost volume and are often sagging. While breast implants, and sometimes lifting, will restore the desired appearance of the breasts, future pregnancies may further affect the breasts in size or drooping.

Breast Implants

Breast enlargement utilizes saline-filled or silicone gel implants to help you achieve the breast size and shape, so as the volume you want. Breast implants have various sizes and shapes to suit the needs and want of each and every patient we see.

If you’re thinking of a breast augmentation procedure it’s very important that you discuss with your plastic surgeon what would you like and what are your expectations. This is important because there are few choices to make when it comes to breast implants.

Dr. George Lefkovits from Park Plaza plastic surgery clinic in New York is very precise about this in his consultations. So if you are from New York, New York call us at (212) 750-9494 to request free consultations.

Implant Types

Silicone Gel Or Saline-filled Implants

The silicone implants are filled with silicone gel that has a “gummy bear” consistency. This type of implant feels natural and is not bio-degradable. If comes to loss of material in a silicone-filled implant shell, a woman is not going to feel that loss. That’s why the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recommends sporadic MRIs to confirm that everything is all right in there.

Saline implants are implants filled with the solution of salt water. Some women prefer this type of implant because it is completely bio-absorbable so it feels to them like a safer option. If comes to implant rupture (which is unlikely), salt water is going to leak and the body is going to absorb it.

Textured Or Smooth Breast Implant Surface

The textured implant has small bumps on the surface and this type is made to reduce the risk of contracture, after breast augmentation. Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma occurs most frequently in women who have textured breast implants, but pretty rare though.

However, many plastic surgeons still prefer a smooth implant surface because it has a more natural and gentle feel.

Subglandular Or Submuscular Placement

Submuscular placement means placing the implant under the breast muscle, while subglandular placement means placing it under the breast tissue. Most breast enlargements involve submuscular placement for several reasons. The most common reason is the greater probability that women will not have problems with breastfeeding. The second common reason for submuscular placement is that reduces the chance of scar tissue contracture.

Round Or Tear-drop Shape Of Breast Implant

When it comes to cosmetic breast augmentation surgery, women mostly choose the round shape implants because it looks more natural. The tear-drop shape is most often used after another procedure such as mastectomy reconstruction.

Every surgery comes with some degree of risk. Breast augmentation surgery is no different. However, when it is performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Lefkovits, the risk of complications associated with breast augmentation is extremely low.

Dr. Lefkovits uses meticulous surgical methods and adheres to high standards of safety and sterility throughout the breast augmentation process to help minimize risks whenever possible. There are also ways you can reduce your own risk level as a patient.

Surgical Risks

Some of the basic risks associated with breast augmentation surgery are:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection
  • Excessive scarring
  • Implant rejection
  • Hematoma (blood vessel breakage)
  • Seroma (fluid collection beneath the skin)
  • Blood clots

Each of these risks can be avoided by closely following our post-surgical instructions. For example, your risk of blood clots can be mitigated by getting out of bed almost immediately after surgery and taking gentle walks.

Risks of Anesthesia During Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed under anesthesia. The type of anesthesia Dr. Lefkovits uses will depend on the extent of your procedure and a number of other factors. There are two basic approaches:

  • General anesthesia — You are fully asleep throughout your breast augmentation procedure.
  • Conscious sedation and local anesthesia — Your level of consciousness is altered, but you are not fully asleep. You may have vague memories of your procedure, but time will seem to move quickly, and you will be comfortable.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Steps

Anesthesia

Breast augmentation surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases, rare though, patients want conscious sedation and local anesthesia.

The Incision, Implant Insertion, and Closing the Incision

Our skilled plastic surgeon, Dr. Lefkovits, will make incisions along your areola, in your armpit, or in the folds of your breast tissue, depending on the implant placement you have chosen.

He put in the implants. Silicone implants are already filled before putting them in, but saline implants are filled once the shell is placed in the pocket.

The final step involves closing the Incision.

After waking up you will be monitored for one hour afterward you will be released.

Recovery After Breast Implants Surgery

Recovery time depends on the type of breast augmentation procedure and your general health. You may be able to resume light activity as soon as 7-10 days after your treatment. On average, full recovery takes around 6-8 weeks.

During the recovery, you will wear compression garments for several weeks and you need to avoid exercise and activities that can hurt you and have a negative impact on your recovery process.

Also, you will be under the pain killers prescribed by Dr. Lefkovits for 2 days after the procedure.

Finally, you must monitor yourself and pay attention to the incision site. Watch for signs of infection, bleeding, or swelling. If you see any of these call us you should call our office or visit our clinic.
