Excess Breast Tissue Casues
Typically, when there is excess fat localized in the breast tissue, it can cause men’s breasts to appear larger. The truth is – there are several potential reasons for male breasts to appear enlarged. An increase in breast size in men can occur at any age, but it is often a result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or drug usage.
The condition is fairly common among teenagers during puberty, as their hormones change in that period of growth. Among older men, hormonal changes can play a big part as well. Hormonal imbalance, since men tend to lose testosterone and gain estrogen as they approach middle age, can play an important part in increasing the size of the chest area. These enlarged breasts usually do not respond to diet and exercise.
Regardless of why you are experiencing breast growth, one thing is for sure – the situation can be frustrating and can make you lose self-confidence. This treatment has helped many men regain their self-confidence, and it can help you achieve the desired look, too.
Mostly, our plastic surgeon can use liposuction to reduce breast (glandular) tissue. Doctor Lefkovits makes a small incision under the breast where he is able to gently remove excess tissue. In some cases, surgical excision may be necessary – entailing cutting out the breast tissue.
Types of Gynecomastia Surgery

There are several different options for gynecomastia surgery, depending on the cause of your excess breast tissue, as well as the size and location of the excess tissue and overall health.
Male Breast Reduction By Removing Fat (Liposuction)
Fatty tissue can be treated with liposuction which entails making a very small incision in the breast fold. This can be done under local or general anesthesia.
Postoperatively, the patient wears a compression garment which is easily hidden under a shirt and jacket. Patients may return to non-strenuous work after just a few days.
Liposuction is a popular technique for gynecomastia, but it is not always effective for all patients.
Male Breast Reduction Consisting Of Surgical Excision
This technique is needed when gynecomastia consists of breast tissue. This is referred to as subcutaneous mastectomy.
Surgical excision involves cutting out excess tissue. An incision is made in the lower half of the areola which barely leaves a scar. A drain is usually used for a few days, and it can easily be hidden. The procedure is commonly performed under general anesthesia. Patients may return to work after a few days but may need to take off 1 week from non-strenuous work.

Male Breast Reduction Consisting Of Liposuction and Surgical Excision
Mixed tissue gynecomastia, which includes fatty and breast tissue, is generally performed under general anesthesia. Return to work is usually in 3-7 days.
Recovery
Recovery time for gynecomastia surgery varies from patient to patient depending on the technique used for male breast reduction and is an improving part of gynecomastia treatment.
What Can You Expect?
After the procedure, you may experience some bruising, swelling, and soreness in the chest area. During recovery, the patient should wear a compression garment, for approximately up to 4 weeks to help reduce swelling. Most of the swelling will diminish 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure.
Massage and ultrasound treatment given post-operatively is an integral part of our surgery program.
When Can You Return To Work?
Return to work may be as quick as the following day, although a few days off is more common. Take your time as recovery is an important part of gynecomastia treatment.
You should avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks after the surgery.
When Can I Expect the First Results?
Excess breast tissue, fat (or both) when removed, allows you to see results immediately. However, since there will be swelling and bruising for at least a month, your results will improve over time.
