About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a procedure that may be performed to enhance the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts, often through the use of implants. Breast implants can come in a variety of materials and shapes, each offering its own unique advantages. The two most common types of breast implants are saline and silicone, and they can be placed either above or below the chest muscles.
Additionally, implants may either be textured or smooth. The texturing on breast implants is designed to help reduce the risk of capsular contracture, or the formation of tight scar tissue. (2) Most patients prefer using smooth implants because of their natural look and feel. Dr. Lefkovits can help each patient select the best implants for their needs.
Types of Breast Implants

Saline Implants
Saline implants have a silicone shell and are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. These implants may either be inserted pre-filled or empty, and inflated once placed in the chest. If saline implants are inserted empty, they may be placed using a smaller incision.
Silicone Implants
Silicone breast implants consist of a silicone shell and are filled with a cohesive silicone gel, offering a softer feel that mimics the natural feel of breast tissue. These implants may either be round or tear-shaped, depending on the patient’s goals. But round implants are the ones mostly used to prevent any distortion in case of implant rotation.
Patients who receive silicone implants will need to schedule future MRIs to check for any potential ruptures or leaks, also known as “silent ruptures.” (3)
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
Many benefits can be experienced after undergoing a breast augmentation. These benefits include:
- Improved Aesthetics: A more desirable aesthetic can be achieved after improving the size, shape, and fullness of the breasts.
- Restored Symmetry: Patients can improve and address any asymmetry between the breasts with implants.
- Balanced Proportions: Augmenting the size or shape of the breasts can help improve one’s overall body proportions.
- Long-Lasting Results: Due to a more sophisticated design and composure, today’s implants no longer have to be replaced after 10 years, as was the previous recommendation.
- Enhanced Confidence: Many women report an improvement in their self-esteem and confidence after seeing the results of their procedure.

Suitable Candidates
Suitable candidates for breast augmentation include women seeking to enhance the size, shape, and volume of their breasts through the use of synthetic implants. Patients interested in reconstructing their breasts after a mastectomy may be recommended for this procedure, as well as those seeking to correct any visual anomalies.
All candidates interested in breast augmentation should be in good health, free of any underlying medical conditions that may impair healing. Realistic expectations should also be held regarding what this procedure can accomplish. Candidates should be nonsmokers or prepared to quit until they are fully healed. Dr. Lefkovits will determine each patient’s candidacy at their consultation.
Personal Consultation

Each patient is asked to attend a personal consultation before scheduling their breast augmentation. This consultation is not only a chance for Dr. Lefkovits to meet each patient but also to understand the motivations and goals behind the decision to undergo augmentation. Dr. Lefkovits will converse with each patient about their current medications, medical history, concerns, and ideal aesthetic. He will show you lots of before and after photos, not just to show you his aesthetic excellence but to better gauge the size that you are looking for.
Once Dr. Lefkovits has determined candidacy, he will create a treatment plan, personalizing certain aspects to help the patient achieve their desired look. Personalized preparation and recovery instructions will also be provided, in addition to a price estimate.

Preparation
Each patient will receive a set of personalized preparation instructions during their consultation. It is important to follow these instructions to facilitate a smooth recovery and achieve the most optimal results. Please note that specific guidelines may vary depending on each individual’s lifestyle and treatment plan.
Patients will be asked to temporarily avoid the use of certain medications and supplements, particularly those containing blood-thinning properties. Those who smoke should cease doing so several weeks before their procedure, fully refraining from use until healed. Logistically, patients will need to arrange transportation home from their procedure, in addition to any time needed away from work and other social commitments.
Procedure

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia or conscious sedation with local anesthesia. Dr. Lefkovits will make an incision in one of the following locations, using advanced techniques to ensure minimal visibility. Depending on the implant placement, the incisions may be:
- Periareolar, or around the nipple-areolar complex.
- Inframammary, or along the breast crease.
After making the appropriate incision, Dr. Lefkovits will create a pocket in the breast tissue for the implant to rest in. The pocket may be created above or below the pectoral muscle, also referred to as subglandular placement and submuscular placement, respectively. The implants will then be carefully placed in the chest before the incisions are closed. Patients can expect the duration of their treatment to be approximately 1-2 hours.
Recovery
As breast augmentations are performed on an outpatient basis, each patient will be discharged home after a monitoring period. For non-strenuous work, patients may return to work after just a few days. It is common for patients to experience swelling or bruising around their treatment area, as well as soreness or discomfort. These effects are temporary and will gradually dissipate on their own, but may also be managed through the use of the recommended pain relief.
Dr. Lefkovits will ask each patient to wear a compression bra for several weeks to help minimize swelling and support the breasts. Patients should continue avoiding physical activity or other strenuous tasks for several weeks or until Dr. Lefkovits approves.
Dr. Lefkovits will ask patients to return for follow-up appointments so that our team may monitor each patient’s recovery.
Results

Each patient will be able to see a significant difference immediately following their procedure, but the full results will become more noticeable as any residual swelling subsides and the implants settle into a more natural place on the chest. Each patient will be able to experience and enjoy the new volume and contour of their breasts, with many reporting an improvement in their confidence and self-esteem. The results of each patient’s breast augmentation are long-lasting.
Corresponding Procedures
Many procedures may be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation for more transformative results, one of the most popular being our mommy makeover! A mommy makeover is a combination of different procedures designed to help postpartum women address multiple parts of the body at once. Our mommy makeover includes a combination of any of the following procedures: Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, and Brazilian Butt Lifts.
- Liposuction: This procedure helps remove stubborn deposits of fat from around the body through the use of a gentle suctioning cannula (tube).
- Tummy Tuck: A tummy tuck can help eliminate excess skin and fat from the midsection while also strengthening one’s core and abdomen.
- Breast Lift: A breast lift helps physically reposition the breasts to create a more youthful-looking appearance. This procedure can also reshape and reposition the nipples for a more proportional look.
- Brazilian Butt Lift: Also known as a BBL, this procedure utilizes fat transferring techniques to help add more volume and definition to the buttocks while maintaining natural-looking results.
