When choosing a surgeon to perform your breast augmentation procedure you need to use several criteria.
First, you must make certain that your surgeon is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only board that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. This is essentially a “Housekeeping Seal” which attests that he/she has undergone a rigorous plastic surgery program and has passed a very comprehensive and difficult 2 part examination.
Please be aware that there are other specialists who call themselves “Cosmetic surgeons” but who are not Plastic Surgeons. They may be Ear Nose and Throat Surgeons or other specialists who have no real training in breast augmentation other than a short course. You should verify their Board certification by seeing their certificate.
Second, you want to make sure that your surgeon has extensive experience with breast augmentation. Some plastic surgeons specialize in hand or reconstructive surgery. You want to be certain that your surgeon performs many breast augmentations on an ongoing basis.
Third, you want to see photos to get an idea of the surgeon’s work. Check to see that the breast implants look natural and seem to be proportionate. Look at the shape and contour of the breasts and see if you would be happy with them. But be aware that each patient will have a different result because they each present differently and have different healing powers.
Fourth, make sure that your surgeon takes time in explaining in detail the surgery and the post-op course, including possible complications. You should feel well informed at the end of the consultation.
Finally, it is important that you feel comfortable with your surgeon and have a good rapport. This will alleviate much of your anxiety and increase your confidence level.
